The State Library will remain open throughout the Vision 2020 redevelopment. However, from time-to-time there may be changes to services, collection access or programs.

The La Trobe Reading Room reopens

The La Trobe Reading Room and dome galleries are open as usual from Thursday 29 November after being closed for construction works.

New entrances opening and Swanston Street entrance temporarily closing

On 21 September, the new entrances on Russell and La Trobe streets will open.

On this day, the Swanston Street entrance will temporarily close (re-opening spring 2019).

Temporary closure of Family History and Newspapers and Arts reading rooms

The Family History and Newspapers and Arts reading rooms will close on 24 August to allow collection material to be moved into the new reading rooms that are opening on 21 September.

Online access to many resources is still available.

Baby Bounce, Storytime and Play Pod programs – soon taking a break

Our Baby Bounce, Storytime and Play Pod programs will take a break until spring 2019, when the new Children’s Quarter will open.

Last dates for 2018 are:

  • Storytime: Thursday 16 August
  • Baby Bounce: Thursday 16 August
  • Play Pod: Sunday 19 August

Further changes to Information Centre services

As part of the Library’s Vision 2020 redevelopment work, the following services will move to the Redmond Barry Reading Room on Tuesday 17 July 2018.

Collection pick-up

The collection pick-up shelves, including self-service shelves and trolleys, will move from the Information Centre to just inside the entrance to the Redmond Barry Reading Room. The new collection point will not be staffed; assistance will be provided by roving staff.

Public PCs

All public internet PCs will move from the Information Centre to the Redmond Barry Reading Room, including:

  • eight sit-down catalogue and database PCs (near Cowen)
  • four stand-up catalogue and database PCs (two near Cowen, two on the mezzanine level).

The reservation point for booking PCs will also move to the Redmond Barry Reading Room.

Five catalogue and database PCs will remain in the centre of the Information Centre.

Printers & copiers

The following printing and copying services will move to the Redmond Barry Reading Room:

  • change machine
  • card dispenser/reload station
  • one colour printer/copier
  • one black and white printer/copier.

One black and white printer/copier will be moved to the La Trobe Reading Room foyer, near the Dromkeen statue.

Other services remaining in the Information Centre

  • Ask a Librarian service point
  • Registration point
  • Assistive Technology equipment/room
  • Current seating
  • New book display
  • Two black and white printer/copiers in the copy room

Reference book collection moving from the Information Centre

We’re in the process of preparing the Information Centre for construction work.

Due to this, the reference book collection has moved upstairs to the Redmond Barry Reading Room on Level 2a. This collection will remain in the Redmond Barry Reading Room until the Vision 2020 project is completed in spring 2019.

Journals and Magazines room closed

The Journals and Magazines room on Level 2A is temporarily closed. You can order journals and magazines from the catalogue or view those on display in the Redmond Barry Reading Room.

Closure of Journals and Magazines room

The Journals and Magazines room on Level 2A will be closed from 2 June. You can order journals and magazines from the catalogue or view those on display in the Redmond Barry Reading Room.

Chess collection temporary relocation

The Chess room will be closed from 7 February.

Chess games sets and the chess collection will be available from 7 February in the La Trobe Reading Room.

The chess collection will move to its permanent home in Ian Potter Queen’s Hall when it reopens in 2019.
